Tutorial: Skull & snake cupcake

Skull & snake cupcake, as made by EJ
Happy Halloween everyone! The final Halloween cupcake tutorial is here (just in the nick of time). These stripy snakes are surprisingly easy to make, nestled on top of a buttercream-filled dome, this is definitely a cupcake for those with a sweet tooth.

As with the other tutorials, you can find my recipe for vanilla cupcakes and buttercream (and the rest of the Halloween collection) here.

To decorate the cupcakes you will need:
  • White sugar paste
  • Orange sugar paste
  • Yellow sugar paste
  • Lilac sugar paste
  • Red sugar paste
  • Green sugar paste
  • A black edible ink pen
  • A little cornflour (to dust your work surface)
  • One quantity of buttercream (using the recipe linked to above)
  • A rolling pin & board
  • An 8cm round cutter
  • A cocktail stick
  • A boning tool (or a sterile cotton bud)
  • A pallet knife

Repeat these steps for each cupcake:

1) Knead a little of the white sugar paste until soft and roll into a ball approximately 3cm diameter.

2) Gently pinch one half of the ball to create a skull shape.

3) Use the small end of the bone tool to indent two eye sockets into the skull.

4) Using the edible ink pen, draw the nose and teeth onto the skull.

5) To make the large orange snake, roll out 30cm lengths of the orange and yellow sugar paste and twist together.

6) By hand, gently roll and press the two colours together to create the striped snake.

7) Flatten one end to create the snake's face and gently pinch to create a point,

8) Roll two tiny balls of orange sugar paste for the snake's eyes.

9) Gently press the eyes onto the snake's face and use the cocktail stick to create the pupils.

10) Repeat steps 5-9 for the lilac snake, shortening the length to approximately 15 cm.

11) Roll out a tiny amount of red sugar paste to a thickness of approximately 1-2mm and use a small knife to cut two forked tongues.

12) To make the dome on top of the cupcake, place a heaped tablespoonful of buttercream on top of the cupcake. Smooth into a dome shape using your pallet knife.

13) Roll out the green sugar paste to a thickness of approximately 3mm, use the 8cm cutter to cut out a circle.

14) Lift the circle and lay it over the buttercream dome, smoothing the sides down evenly with your hands.

15) To assemble, coil the orange snake around the cupcake dome, starting at an outer edge. Nestle the skull inside the top of the coil. Gently attach the forked tongue beneath the snake's head and rest it on top of the skull. Poke the tail of the lilac snake into the skull's eye and coil it draping over the top of the orange snake, attach the tongue beneath the head.

Et voila! The last Halloween cupcake tutorial for this year - you can find links to the rest of the collection here.
